As a collaboration between the Amerika-Institut and LMU’s Department of Theater Studies, it is our great pleasure to invite you to the German book launch of Prof. Dr. David Savran’s new study Tell It to the World: The Broadway Musical Abroad, published by Oxford University Press in 2024. The event is co-organized with the Theaterakademie August Everding and will take place on Wednesday, November 20, at 6 pm at the Munich Studiobühne.
David Savran is a renowned theater scholar and specialist in U.S. twentieth and twenty-first century drama and theater and transnational musical theater. He is the author of countless articles and eight books including Highbrow/Lowdown: Theater, Jazz, and the Making of the New Middle Class (2010), the winner of the Joe A. Callaway Prize for the Best Book in Theatre or Drama. He is Distinguished Professor of Theater at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
His study Tell It to the World: The Broadway Musical Abroad asks what happens when the Broadway musical travels abroad. David Savran explores this question in two different geographical and cultural contexts: South Korea and Germany. He explores the ways in which the Broadway musical transforms local idioms and traditions in the twenty-first century and shows how the Broadway style has changed musical theater traditions around the world.
